Rainy and cold, to warm and sunny

Day 23. Rancheria to Teslin, Yukon. Distance 88 miles.

During our ride today, it was overcast and cold for the first half, and it added sprinkling rain for the second half. But not long after we arrived at our campground, it has gotten sunny and warm. And we're so far north, it will stay sunny until about 9:30 pm. Even then, it stays light for a couple hours longer. During July, it's light here for 19 hrs a day.

Not to waste a sunny afternoon, we all played horseshoes. The Browns won the first game against Bert and Rick. Then they beat Bert and me. But in the final game, Rick and I put them in their place.
What a great shot of Bert this is!

Our best-laid plans for breakfast did not work out this morning. We decided to ride 11 miles to a restaurant. Trouble was, when we got there, the entire "town" on the map was out of business. That's the thing about the dots on the maps up here; as I mentioned in an earlier blog, they're not towns even though you'd think they were since they're on the map. But they're just roadside private businesses, which can go OUT of business. Our anticipated breakfast restaurant was in the mapped "town" of Continental Divide Lodge, but it must have closed in the past year since our tour book was published.

So, we parked the RV at the Continental Divide landmark and ate our usual cereal and juice breakfast, and kept on riding.

Farther along, we came to another mapped "town" that was now closed and out of business. This one sounded pretty funny to me - a river was closed? Did they dam it up and pump the water to the other side of the Continental Divide? haha Well, the name of the roadside business was Swift River:
During our lunch stop at 45 miles, it started to rain. But it was light, so we continued on. Luckily, it remained light, and we had a tail wind. So, the ride to our campground was not bad at all. Here's a picture of the pretty Swan Lake (our second Swan Lake. We stayed at one on Day 3 in Montana).
I saw NO wildlife today. Rick saw a porcupine!

We're now looking forward to our 114-mi ride into Whitehorse tomorrow. Lots to do there, including a Yukon Brewery tour (or free beer samples even if we miss the last tour at 4 pm). It's quite the historic town based on the gold rush of the 1890s.
